Dust
extraction or dust collection is critical when building or construction anything
which requires a good finish.
Sanding
to a smooth surface is necessary for the finish coat to be clean and clear.
Epoxy used in boat building
levels
out to just sucha
finish, but dust suspended in the atmosphere will settle and ruin
your hard work.
Understanding
this, I built my own dust collector, but many excellent extraction systems are
available online.
My
cost so
far....$6.50 and some screws.
You guessed it, I'm cheap! I found
these two fans at a garage sale, and paid the grand sum of $1.00 each. The
shelving came from the company I work for. They were going to dump this good
wood !!! Can you believe it?? I had to add the screws to put it together.
The egg-crate grid is from an old light fitting, and the filter, yes, I
had to buy the filter... 2 x for $9.99. I sized it according to our home
furnace, so the other filter is not going to waste.
I have a loose piece of the egg-crate, which I
place over the filter, and vacuum with my Shop Vac at the end of each
dust-making session. The egg-crate prevents the filter from snagging on
the vacuum head and getting damaged.
We aren't all lucky enough to pick up extraction fans at
garage sales, and still, nothing can beat a well designed, professionally
built dust extraction unit. These are all excellent buys. Click on the links
and have your dust collector delivered to your door.
